Urban Sensory Exploration
Purpose
The sensory exploration format was developed to help participants recognise how scent, atmosphere and spatial context influence perception, orientation and emotional response in physical environments.
It offers a practical way to observe how sensory signals operate in real-world settings.
How the format works
Participants move through carefully selected locations and engage in guided observation exercises.
The format encourages participants to:
• notice sensory signals present in the environment
• analyse how scent contributes to atmosphere and place identity
• reflect on emotional and associative responses
• discuss how environments communicate through sensory cues.
What participants learn
• how scent influences the perception of place
• how atmosphere shapes emotional response and memory
• how sensory signals interact within spatial environments
• how perception mechanisms observed in cities can apply to brand environments.
Applications
The exploration format can be used in:
• learning formats exploring sensory perception
• creative inspiration sessions
• workshops examining spatial and sensory communication
• discussions about brand environments and experiential design.
Format Details
• guided observational exploration
• small group format
• focused on discussion and perception analysis.
Example:
Follow Your Nose — Munich
An exploratory route through selected locations examining the olfactory dimension of the city.
An author-developed observational format
This guided exploration format was developed to examine how environments communicate through scent, atmosphere and spatial signals.
Rather than a traditional city tour, the format focuses on observing perception in real environments and understanding how sensory cues shape the experience of place.
